All The Black Girl Magic At US Open 2019 Has Me Super Emo About Venus and Serena Williams And Their Legacy

True pioneers and queens

I can’t remember the first time I saw either of them on my television screen, Venus and Serena Williams, but I do remember watching a few of their matches back in their early days. I’m the least athletic person in the world, but I’m a deeply experienced spectator of several sports, so yes, I watched tennis matches when JBC or whatever the station was called back in the 90s used to show the grand slams. (I was a huge fan of Steffi Graf and Pete Sampras is bae to this day.) So I don’t know how I can’t recall their majors debuts, these two black girls just showing up when I’d never seen a black person in this sport before, let alone two. But I do remember seeing pictures and clips of them in action, beaded canerows flying. I remember there were braces involved at a certain point, too. I remember being shocked that black people played tennis. I was too young to know the significance of them existing in this space, but I would come to learn.

My Day With Marley Dias

I don’t even remember how she first came to my attention, but I’ve been a fan of Marley Dias (pronounced dye-as, not dee-az) for the past two years or so that she’s been in the public eye for her #1000BlackGirlBooks campaign. I often say, not even half joking, that if my own future kiddo isn’t going to be as awesome as this girl or more so, I will not be doing the reproducing. I love bright, bold, articulate, adventurous, confident, proactive kids who seem like they know exactly why they’re here and just go about doing it. I was never that child, and I’m still not that adult, so I’m always fascinated by these prodigies and just want them to teach me their ways.

Does This White Hat Make Me Look Like A Gladiator? A Few Thoughts On Scandal As It Goes #OverACliff For Its Finale

Tonight marks the end of an era as Scandal, Shonda Rhimes’ uber fast-paced, twisty, scandalous drama airs its final episode. Seven or so years ago back when it premiered, you couldn’t have told me this moment wouldn’t bring me to tears (I am very dramatic and I tend to stan at BeyHive levels for the people and things I love). I mean, I was OBSESSED. I was over-the-moon excited about the cast because I always thought Kerry Washington was severely underappreciated, and Columbus Short was too fine for words.

This white dress was a moment, hunny!

Viola Davis AND Lupita Nyong’o Are Gonna Star In A Movie Together And I Am Faint!!

Y’all.

Y’ALL!

In case it’s slipped you, or you’re new here and don’t follow me on social media, I love me some Viola Davis and I LUH-UV me some Lupita Nyong’o. Borderline obsessed, but I am not ashamed. 🤷‍♀️ I’ve been dreaming about a movie with these two powerhouse queens since Luey (yes, I have nicknames for my BFF-in-my-head) came on the scene in 2013/2014, but I was still NOT prepared for the news that came across my TL on The Twitter about half hour ago. (Never mind that I’m supposed to be on a social media fast.)

JESUS SAVIOUR PILOT ME!!!

Why Are So Many People BIG MAD About Viola Davis’ Oscar Acceptance Speech?

Let’s get one thing straight right out the gate: Viola Davis is a walking, talking acting masterclass. I will brook no opposition. I mean, did you SEE this scene from How to Get Away with Murder? That, in my opinion, sealed her 2015 Emmy win for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Shoot, they would have given her a second one for the rest of her work that season if it was allowed. I watched that scene while giving her a standing ovation. I had chills. Queen Viola is phenomenal and peerless and regal and amazing, and she finally won an Academy Award last night for her work in the movie Fences. (Let us not even go into the fact that she should have been in the Best Actress category, not Best Supporting Actress.)

Black excellence personified, tbh (Collage from @fyeahtgawm on Twitter)

#FavouriteFinds: Oti Mabuse – #BlackGirlMagic In The Ballroom

Anyone who knows me knows I am o b s e s s e d with dancing and dance shows. I was a ballerina in a past life, and y’all can’t tell me different. Anyway… I’ve watched any and every dance show that’s ever been on a screen in my lifetime, and will continue to do so as long as I live.

My Find for today, and one of my WCEs, is the petite lioness from Pretoria, South Africa, Otlile “Oti’ Mabuse. She is 5’4” of ballroom badassery, and she shines like a glitterball on the dance floors of both Strictly Come Dancing in the UK, and Let’s Dance in Germany.

Body goals, tbh. And she’s so cute!
